Known for his signature dark sunglasses and quirky take on music, The Dare has made waves since his breakout single “Girls” hit the scene in August 2022. The Los Angeles-born, New York City-based musician has developed a unique blend of nostalgic sounds and modern energy, gaining a cult following. His production work on Charli XCX’s song “Guess” from her 2024 album Brat — which later received a remix featuring Billie Eilish — further solidified his place in the industry.
Harrison Patrick Smith, the man behind The Dare, was inspired one night by The Rolling Stones’ Some Girls, which led him to create what would later become his first major hit: “Girls”. This track set the tone for his evolving musical style, eventually culminating in his first EP, Sex, released on May 19, 2023.
This year, the 27-year-old took his sound international, performing a Boiler Room set in Ibiza, further cementing his place in the global music scene. Today (September 6), he has finally released his debut album, What’s Wrong With New York?.
Though deeply rooted in the aesthetics of indie electronica, post-punk, and new wave, the album plays with genre conventions.
Among the standout tracks, “Perfume” stands out with its sleek electro-rock style, offering a more serious tone compared to Smith’s usual playful approach. “I Destroyed Disco” emerges as a pointed commentary, aligning The Dare with the very genre he critiques, while pulsating with high-energy beats and a rebellious spirit. “All Night”, however, is the sleeper highlight of the album. It transforms playful and catchy elements into anthemic brilliance, showcasing Smith’s versatility. The track moves through distinct, thoughtfully crafted phases, making it suitable for both high-energy club settings and more laid-back occasions. It’s a testament to Smith’s ability to balance fun and finesse in his music.
With a 10-track lineup, What’s Wrong With New York? is a bold debut, daring listeners to embrace its abrasive charm. The tracklist includes:
- Open Up
- Good Time
- Perfume
- Girls
- I Destroyed Disco
- You’re Invited

The Dare is undoubtedly an artist worth keeping an eye on.
